Mary Corbet

English version below

Mary Corbet, of the website Needlenthread, whose blog I follow for years already. She always has tips on embroidery, and has video tutorials explaining stitches, reviews of books about embroidery. In short, a great source for knowledge and inspiration.
This week, she talks in this blog about the article she wrote as a guest author for the San Fransisco School of Needlework. She describes an important aspect of  needlework, you can find the article here: august-2019-newsletter-1464793.

She describes how her ideas about the importance of her embroidery have changed, evolved almost, because of her disease an the difficult period after it. How embroidery gives you peace of mind, and is almost a kind of meditation when one's head is full of thoughts and the heart is worried. How it can be healing to just do, not have to think about design, or colour and stitch combinations, and yet create something beautiful.

Mary describes exactly what I myself experienced after a very intense year: it is wonderful to just 'do' and definitely not less lofty or important when you just follow a pattern, stitch a kit or embellish a simple tea towel.
Within 16 months, I lost both my parents, I learned I had breastcancer a day after I had bought a new house; our old home was sold, our new home was remodeled, and we moved from a large house to a substantially smaller one.
Although my needlework after the move mainly consisted of sewing for the two grand babies we are hoping to have within the next 6 weeks, I felt empty, and had no ideas to start a sampler or some other substantial project. In fact, the idea alone was overwhelming.

Just at the time I had concluded I needed to do something less complicated, and became enthusiastic about the idea, I came across Mary's article. Funny how these things coincide.

This morning I spent pulling the 82 shades of DMC floss called for in the pattern of my choice: Morning Light by Barabara and Cheryl. It will perfectly complement two other cross stitched pictures by the same designers, already on my living room wall.
