Hedebo 2

Taellesyning

Taellesyning

The embroidery mentioned in my previous blogpost, will be a curtain, and like a 'sampler' is composed of the techniques Taellesyning, Dragverk, Rudesyning, Hvidsøm, and Baldyring. For Udklips we need a finer linen. Naturally, the lessons for my friends start with the eldest form, Taellesyning.

Examples of taellesyning embroidery can be found in various museums in Denmark, for instance in the historic museum of Roskilde, Køge, Nykoping, the aforementioned museum of Greve and the kunstindustrimuseet-museum of art and design in Copenhagen.

The counted sewing is the oldest/earliest form of embroidery we call Hedebo embroidery. As mentioned in the previous post, this type of embroidery is characterized by the geometrical patterns and the diagonal 'bars' which are composed of 3 to 4 half crosses, embroidered one above the other.

My choice for my Hedebo sampler were these motifs:

Further down the sampler I chose a border that is a merge between Taellesyning and the later form Rudesyning (see the cutwork in this border).

These pictures clearly show the diagonal lines, formed by stitching three or four half crosses one above the other. Just like the embroidery of Hardanger and Marken, these diagonals are the basis of the embroidery, after which the left over open spaces are filled with motifs made to fit the space. Often  the stitcher used her own judgment here.

My friends, in the meantime, have practised all three of them, various borders of taellesyning and have moved on to work on Dragverk. More on that later on..

Hedebo 1

English text below

A small group of stitching friends intend to study various embroidery techniques. For this, we gather about once a month and share enthusiasm, inspiration, and we help one another. This winter we will study the embroidery techniques practiced in the areas south west of Copenhagen, called Hedebo.

The honor of teaching is mine, for once upon a time I followed a course on Hedebo, taught by Tineke Tinbergen for the Vrouwen van Nu. We will base our embroidery on a series of articles, also written by Tineke Tinbergen, for the Dutch needlework magazine Handwerken zonder Grenzen (which means Needlework withou/beyondt borders.
*The series of articles is mentioned in the sources and literature list below.

It's not common knowledge that Hedebo consists of more than just the needle lace which is known by it's Danish name Udklips.

The earliest form of these embroidery techniques is called taellesyning (counted sewing) and was practiced as of 1700. A well chosen name because counting is basic  for this fom of embroidery, with it's typical diagonal 'beams' of half crosses and a strictly geometrical look. Taellesyning was mostly found on clothes, along shirt collars and cuffs.

So our little group will be starting with taellesyning, and will later get to the younger forms of these techniques. Since it was some time ago I practiced all forms of Hedebo, I decided to freshen up my knowledge by embroidering a narrow sampler of 125 x 31 cm, on a white 14 threads per cm linen (36 count), incorporating all techniques but the Udklips, which requires a higher count linen.

Below you will find a list of literature and other sources of information on Hedebo.

Mama

On August the 18th my greatest example, my dear mother passed away. Words fail me  to describe the loss I experience now that it is still so fresh. We are relieved she is no longer in pain.

My mother, Lilian Lize Maria Johanna Brinkhuis-Wigleven, was a keen needleworker, who often expressed her love by knitting, crocheting, embroidering or sewing gifts.

Once I named this pattern Lilian Lize,  because she loved butterflies. As a tribute to her I now give this pattern to everyone who enjoys embroidery.

The you stitch it some day, think of your own mother, thank her for all she did/does for you.

Please respect my copyright by sharing the link, not the pattern itself.

Friese Merklappen

(English text below the photos)

Frisian white and cutwork samplers

Visiting her in March, now it is her turn to visit me in Waddinxveen, and more in general, the Netherlands. At her place, we were studying Lefkara, white and cutwork from Cyprus. We had been enticing her to visit us, mentioning our local whitework and cutwork, for starters the Marken and Friesland style of whitework. Her visit here is pending..

But after embroidering a first Frisian style whitework sampler a few years ago, I stranded with my second one, in which I very enthusiastically had designed a large J (J did not exist in Frisian alphabets), a K a beautiful heart and an edge in cutwork, I did not know quite what else to embroider on it. It was still quite bare..

I want to be able to show Yolande some personal Frisian work.. and since I already had made whitework Frisian sheets for the cradle of my two grandsons, I thought I might turn this one into a birth sampler of some sort.. After all, the first alphabet cloth also bore the name and birthdate of the elder grandson..

And presto, there was a plan of sorts to finish the sampler. Now it was done quite fast - in solar we can talk of fast, hand embroidering! The technique is fresh in my mind (or in my fingers, as we say in Dutch)

Italië, maar ook: Marken! Italy, but also: Marken (in the Netherlands)

This is where you find a wide range of needlework magazines.

Fast forward enkele jaren...

Italy, but also: Marken

Those who have already discovered the Italian dictionary (tab at the top of the homepage), will have gathered that I enjoy Italian needlework. Whenever I have the chance, I buy the magazines which are available throughout Italy from newsstands such as in the photo. Magazines featuring cross stitch patterns, crochet, knitting, but also Richelieu cutwork and needlepointing. At first I bought the magazines as a souvenir, or for the cross stitch. Later, I regretted not understanding more of the text.

Fast forward some years .. During the needlework fair Manidoro in Bellaria, Anna Castagnetti introduced me and my sampler in Marken embroidery to the staff of Giuliana Ricama, a leading Italian magazine about embroidery and (needle) lace. Impressed with the technique, which for them was hitherto unknown, they asked me to design something suitable for their magazine. Well, the designing part is not so time consuming.. but the execution and finishing needs some time. Hence it took until last November to publish my article in the magazine. In the issue of January, an additional interview was published with Aafke Buurs, a collector of needlework and specifically Dutch samplers.

Shortly I will spend some days in Italy. Luckily I will be by car, so I can bring home all the magazines I want. Lots of space and no weight limits!

To find out more about Giuliana Ricama, click here. And, the exception confirms te rule, the Giuliana is only to be found in needlework shops.

At the top of the homepage you see various tabs for different topics. The one with "Dictionary Italian stitches and words", as of today, and thanks to the work of many volunteers, will show two lists of translations:

  1. A photo list of stitches and their Italian name, translated into Dutch, English, French, German and Spanish.
  2. A list with terminology you might encounter reading an Italian stitching magazine or book.
It would be wonderful if everyone who is interested in Italian needlework would share this as much as possible.

Terug van weg geweest. Here it is again..

In 2007 My Aunts Attic started, the blog on which - with lots of volunteer help - I published the patterns my Aunt Joop at one time, had purchased in a cancellation sale of a needlework shop in Hilversum. This was long ago, in a time without pc's, and graphs were drawn by pencil on graph paper. It was a huge job, but in about one year time, over 300 cross stitch patterns were published as freebies. They can be used for cross stitch, but also for darning on a net and crochet. The blog was frequently visited, right up to the moment that the host of the blog was merged with a new firm. I had no energy or knowledge how to migrate the blog to a new host and thus the blog ceased to be, and with it the patterns. I intend to re-publish them on this blog, in due time. Just because it was fun to have them all together..and maybe there are still embroiderers that did not know about it then..
