Een wollen afwerk randje uit Scandinavië

Voor mijn zoon zijn verjaardag maak ik een hoesje voor zijn e-reader van gevilte wol. In Scandinavië noemen ze dit vadmal. In Nederland te koop bij de Blomsterstuga. Deze dikke wol is stevig en kun je verwerken zonder dat het veel rafelt. Om toch wat versiering aan te brengen, omzoomde ik de rafel-kanten met een traditioneel randje, dat er net uitziet of het gebreid is. Het resultaat, een vrolijk maar niet te opzichtig handgemaakt hoesje voor de Kobo.

Borduur de festonsteken 5 mm hoog en 4 mm uit elkaar
To embroider this woollen edge, first you make buttonhole stitches along the edge, about 5 mm tall, and 4 mm apart, then
weave over, under, over the buttonhole 'legs'

vul alle 4 de geweven draden op deze wijze met geborduurde V-tjes. Je herhaalt de truc aan de achterkant!
Fill with 4 threads weaving one up one down.
Fill the entire edge with this weaving. Then take a contrasting thread and stitch from the edge inwards, picking up both the buttonhole leg, as well as the woven thread. To return, turn the work 180 degrees and again stitch from outside to inside, picking up both the woven thread as well as the leg.Continue until all 4 woven threads have been stitched. When done, repeat the process on the reverse.

As a gift for my sons' birthday, I am making a cover for his e-reader. I use vadmal for this, the Scandinavian name for felted woollen fabric. it's available from webshop Blomsterstuga. This fabric is sturdy and can be used without too much fraying. To give it a little decoration, I have edged it with a traditional embroidered edge from Scandinavia. The resulting cover looks cheerful, but is not too ostentatious.
